How to Protect Car Paint in the Pacific Northwest

The best way to protect car paint in the Pacific Northwest is to wash it regularly, remove sap and droppings promptly, park under cover when you can, and put a long-lasting layer on top, such as a ceramic coating or film. Rain itself isn’t the problem. What it carries is.

Here’s what actually damages paint around here, and what to do about each threat.

The Real Threats

Road film

Rain on dirty roads splashes a gray film onto paint that dries and bonds. It dulls the finish and traps grit. Regular washing removes it before it sets, and a coating makes it release more easily.

Tree sap and pollen

Evergreens drop sap and needles, and spring pollen coats everything. Left on paint, sap can etch the clear coat. Rinse it off promptly, and avoid parking under the same tree for days on end.

Moss and green film

Damp, shaded cars grow a green film on seals, trim and paint. It holds moisture against the surface. Washing, drying and parking in sunlight help.

Bird droppings

They're acidic and can etch clear coat within days. Remove them promptly with plenty of water, never by dry wiping.

Brake dust and winter road treatments

Brake dust embeds in wheels and lower panels, and winter road treatments leave residue. Rinsing the undercarriage and wheels helps.

A Protection Plan That Works Here

1
Wash every two to four weeks, more after storms and sap
2
Rinse sap and droppings quickly
3
Dry the car so water spots and moisture don’t linger
4
Park under cover when you can
5
Add lasting protection. Wax is short-lived. A coating or film lasts years

Wax, Coating or Film?

Wax gives a few weeks of protection. A ceramic coating bonds to paint, sheds water and road film and lasts years. Film absorbs rock chips. Many owners combine film and coating. See ceramic coating vs. wax and paint protection film vs. ceramic coating.

Our DuraSlic DS 1500 is rated for 5-year scrub test performance and DS 1500 Xtreme for 10 years, and FlightShield carries a 3-year warranty. See how long ceramic coating lasts and ceramic coating cost.

Wax, Coating or Film?

Fall:

Wash, protect and clean wheels before the wet months

Winter:

Rinse frequently and dry the car

Spring:

Remove sap and pollen, and deep clean the interior

Summer:

Check for UV wear and clean off bugs and dust

What Not to Do

Don't dry-wipe dust, sap or droppings, which scratches the clear coat
Don't wash in direct sun, which leaves mineral spots
Don't rely on automatic tunnel washes with worn brushes
Don't leave wet leaves or debris sitting on paint and in drainage areas
Don't ignore chips, which let moisture reach bare metal

A Simple Weekend Reset

When the weather breaks, a thirty-minute reset does a lot: rinse the car thoroughly, wash with a clean mitt, rinse again, dry with clean towels, and check the paint for sap or droppings you missed. It keeps small problems from becoming big ones, and a protected car makes it faster still.

Don't Forget the Inside

Damp weather brings wet shoes, dripping coats and musty smells. Dry floor mats and clean spills fast. See pet hair and odor removal for stubborn problems.

Where to Start

If you’ve been neglecting the paint, a hand wash and clay bar reset it. See our hand car wash and how often to detail your car. For a proper restart, an Exterior Detail with one-step correction and wax starts at $325 for small vehicles, as listed on our pricing page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you protect car paint in the Pacific Northwest?
Wash regularly, remove sap and droppings fast, park under cover and add lasting protection such as a ceramic coating or paint protection film.
Rain itself doesn’t, but the road film, pollen and pollution it carries can dull and etch paint if left.
Rinse and soften it with water, then use a product designed for sap and a soft cloth. Fresh sap is much easier. Stubborn spots can be treated during a detail.
Yes. It sheds water and road film and makes washing easier, which suits a wet climate.
Every two weeks or so, and sooner after heavy road grime, is a good rule.
