What Is Paint Correction?

Paint correction is the process of machine polishing a car’s clear coat to remove swirl marks, haze, water-spot etching and light scratches. It levels the surface so defects disappear, rather than filling them in. The result is a smoother, glossier finish.

How Paint Correction Works

Your car’s color sits under a clear coat. Most visible flaws live in that clear layer. Polishing removes a very small amount of it, enough to level out the scratches. The process starts with a hand wash and clay bar, then machine polishing with progressively finer polishes.

Why Swirl Marks Happen

Swirl marks come from contact. Dirty wash mitts, worn tunnel brushes, rough towels and dry wiping all drag fine grit across the clear coat and leave microscopic scratches. In direct sun, those scratches catch the light and show up as circles. They are cumulative, which is why older cars and cars that get washed a lot at drive-through washes often look hazy even when they're clean.

What It Fixes

Swirl marks that show as circles in direct sun

Haze and dullness from age and tunnel washes

Water-spot etching that sits in the clear coat

Light scratches that don't catch a fingernail

Marks from automatic car washes

What It Doesn't Fix

Deep scratches that cut through the clear coat

Peeling or failing clear coat

Rock chips down to primer

Rust or body damage

Those need body-shop work. A good shop says so before starting.

One-Step vs. Multi-Step

A one-step correction uses a single polishing stage to remove light defects and restore gloss. Heavier defects may need a second stage. On our menu, the Exterior Detail includes one-step correction and a hand wax, and Platinum and Signature step up to two-step correction. See the pricing page.

Why Prep Comes Before Protection

1

Ask whether they inspect the paint under proper light before and after
2
Ask what they will and won’t promise to remove
3
Ask how much clear coat they’re willing to remove, and why
4
Ask what protection goes on afterward
5
Look for manufacturer certification on the products they apply
A shop that explains these things clearly is more likely to do the work carefully. Our how to choose a car detailer checklist covers more.

Signs Your Paint Might Benefit

The finish looks hazy or flat even after a wash
You can see circular scratches in sunlight
Water spots have left marks that won't wash off
The car looks dull next to a similar newer one
You're about to apply a coating or film and want it done right
If two or more of these sound familiar, correction will likely make a visible difference.

How to Keep Paint From Needing Correction

1

Avoid brush-style tunnel washes
2
Wash with clean tools and plenty of water
3
Dry gently with clean towels
4
Protect the paint with wax, coating or film
5
Rinse off sap and droppings quickly
