How Long Does Ceramic Coating Last?

A professionally installed ceramic coating can last several years, and manufacturers rate their best products for 5 to 10 years of scrub-test performance. Real-world life depends on the coating, the prep, how the car is washed and where it’s parked, so treat any rating as a ceiling, not a promise.

Here’s what actually decides how long a coating lasts, and how to get the most from yours.

What the Ratings Mean

DuraSlic rates its DS 1500 for 5-year scrub test performance and its DS 1500 Xtreme for 10-year performance. A scrub test measures how well the coating resists abrasion in a lab. It’s a useful way to compare products, but it doesn’t predict how many calendar years a coating will look perfect on your car.

Our Signature Detail uses FlightShield reactive polymer with a 3-year warranty. A warranty is a promise from the installer and manufacturer. Ask what it covers and what upkeep it requires.

Prep and installation

A coating bonds to clean, smooth paint. Skipped decontamination or polishing means a weaker bond and uneven results. Installers who are certified by the manufacturer follow the product's process. Our paint correction page explains the prep.

How the car is washed

Gentle hand washing keeps a coating working. Harsh brushes and strong cleaners wear it down faster. See how to wash your car without scratching it.

Where it's parked

A garage-kept car keeps a coating longer than one parked outside under trees, in sun and in rain. Western Washington's moisture and sap add to the load, as protecting paint in the Pacific Northwest explains.

Mileage and road conditions

Freeway driving brings stone chips and road film. A coating handles film well but doesn't stop chips, which is where film comes in. Compare the two in paint protection film vs. ceramic coating.

A Realistic Timeline

In the first months, a fresh coating beads water into tight, round drops and the paint feels glassy. Over the following years, beading gradually loosens and the surface becomes a little less slick, even when the coating is still protecting the paint. The change is slow, which is why many owners don't notice it until they compare the car with a fresh one. A coating that is cared for and parked out of the weather will hold that performance far longer than one left outside and washed in a brush tunnel.

How to Tell if a Coating Is Wearing Out

Water stops beading and sheets or pools instead
Dirt sticks and washing takes more effort
Gloss looks flatter than it used to
The surface feels less slick under your hand
Wear is gradual. If you notice these signs, bring the car in and we’ll look at the coating and tell you whether it needs attention.

How to Get the Most From a Coating

1

Wash gently every couple of weeks, and sooner after sap or droppings
2
Avoid automatic tunnel washes with brushes
3
Rinse the car first so grit doesn’t scratch the surface
4
Dry with clean towels to avoid mineral spots
5
Park in a garage or shade when you can

Is It Worth It?

For many owners, yes. A coating makes the car easier to keep clean and protects the paint for years. See is ceramic coating worth it for the honest pros and cons, and what ceramic coating costs for the price factors.
